Advanced Speciality Courses

Your First Step Towards Extended Range

Take The Challenge And Join The Adventure!

Learn the fundamentals of technical diving and challenge yourself to improve your skills as a diver. Listed below you will find our Advanced Speciality courses. These courses will give you the fundamental training and mindset to be a technical diver and also let you improve your skills, as well as give you a more in-depth knowledge about the science of diving.

Advanced Wreck Diving

The XR Tech course – Advanced Wreck Diving is one of the entry pathways into the technical diving of SSI Extended Range programs. It is designed to give divers basic skills for the purposes of doing limited penetrations into shipwrecks. For the purposes of this course, limited means that the diver must at all times remain within penetrating light that comes from an entrance or exit large enough for two divers to swim through easily.

COURSE CONTENT

SSI Extended Range programs form a bridge between Recreational Diving and Technical Diving. They are designed to allow you, the recreational diver, the chance to enter the exciting world of Extended Range diving without necessarily having to dramatically change your existing diving philosophy. These programs simply enhance and build upon your existing knowledge. They provide the components that will allow you to use the different gases, new equipment and skills necessary to complete limited decompression schedules.

Cavern Diving

XR Cavern Diver is one of the entry pathways into the Technical Diving SSI Extended Range. It is designed to give ongoing Tech Cavern divers’ basic skills for the purposes of doing limited penetrations into the natural light zone of underwater cave systems.
For the purposes of this course, limited means that the diver must at all times remain within a penetrating sunlight zone and in areas where two divers can pass comfortably side by side (no restrictions).

COURSE CONTENT

The Cavern Course is the first part of a series of cave diving courses. The XR Cavern Manual focuses on line handling skills, propulsion techniques and buoyancy control. These are the foundations for safe penetration diving. The more advanced courses (and text) will expand these skills to include more complex navigation patterns and advanced gas management techniques.

Extended Range Nitrox Diving

The line between recreational Nitrox diving and technical diving is sometimes difficult to determine. Descending here in Cebu, Philippines along a coral wall in clear warm waters you will not find a warning sign painted at 40m! Many recreational divers have successfully ventured deeper and have safely returned to the surface.
Just as recreational divers have crossed the boundary into “tech”, it is often the case that technical diving conditions exist within recreational limits. A dive to 36m on a deteriorating wreck in low visibility, cold water and heavy current certainly tests the classic definition of a recreational dive!

COURSE CONTENT

This program qualifies you to dive to 40 meters using Nitrox and 15 minutes of accelerated decompression using a one stage decompression gas (oxygen).

The Extended Range Course has been designed to address two distinct objectives. First, it will provide all divers with the knowledge, skill, equipment familiarity, and experience to minimize risk, increase confidence, and have more fun in challenging extended range conditions. Second, it will provide a solid foundation for those divers who wish to participate in more advanced technical training and further extend their range underwater.

Gas Blender

The Tech Certification XR Gas Blender  entitles the holder to blend nitrox and helium based trimix gasses while affiliated with and operating under the supervision of an SSI TXR Dive Centre.
So the main part of this course will be how to analyse and top up gas cylinders in a safe way.

COURSE CONTENT

  • Verify Diver’s Certification
  • Verify Hydro Test (where required)
  • Inspect visible valve parts for dirt, debris, lubricants and improper O-rings
  • Connect the cylinder to the fill system
  • Top off cylinder to desired fill pressure at a max rate of 20 bar/300 psi per minute
  • Check cylinder frequently for heating and slow/stop fill rate as required
  • Analyze the gas
  • Fill in blender’s log sheet
  • Require and supervise analysis by the diver taking the cylinder
  • Have the diver verify the information, record his Max Operating Depth and sign the log sheet
